Chinese contributions to IR: Almost the same but not quite

Abstract

La discusión pospositivista en la disciplina de las Relaciones Internacionales ha buscado identificar sitios alternativos de producción teórica en/desde los diversos sures globales para balancear el predominio de la teoría occidental. Este también ha sido asumido como un proyecto político por potencias (re)emergentes como China, que ven en su pasado una forma original de pensar en lo internacional/mundial y asumen que, al trasplantar elementos (conceptos, instituciones) de ese pensamiento al presente, pueden crear escuelas de rr.ii. propias que teorizan fuera y por encima de la influencia del mainstream. Este capítulo explora esas declaraciones de originalidad en/ desde China, encontrando un pensamiento mundial original en el período dinástico, una transición tras el contacto con la modernidad occidental hacia un pensamiento internacional convencional que se reproduce hoy en los intentos político-académicos de innovación y una serie de emergencias inspiradas por el taoísmo que se ubican en la zona gris entre la innovación y la repetición.

The post-positivist debates in IR have sought to identify alternative sites of theoretical production in/from the global south(s) to balance against the predominance of Western theory. This has also been taken up as a political project by (re)emerging powers like China, that find novel ways of thinking about the international/global in their past and assume that, by transplanting elements (concepts, institutions) from that past thought to the present, they can create their own schools of IR that theorize outside of and ahead of the influence of the mainstream. This chapter explores such claims of originality in/from China, finding an original form of world thought during the dynastic period, a transition toward conventional international thought after the contact with Western modernity that reproduces itself today in the political-academic attempts at innovativeness, and several Daoist-inspired emergences that locate themselves in the grey area between innovation and repetition.
