Turismo espiritual en el departamento de Lavalleja (Uruguay): devenires de la temporalidad histórica

Este artículo describe y analiza los devenires que ha tenido –y tiene– el turismo espiritual en el departamento de Lavalleja (Uruguay) desde una perspectiva antihistoricista. Esto significa que el estudio de los devenires del turismo espiritual no se ha concebido desde un enfoque “lineal” del tiempo histórico. A partir de la aplicación del concepto de tiempo-ahora, elaborado por el filósofo Walter Benjamin, las diferentes temporalidades que coexisten en forma aislada en determinadas ocasiones se vuelven a conectar; esto impide presentar una explicación causal del desarrollo histórico del turismo espiritual en dvicho departamento y permite que ciertos aspectos del pasado surjan en determinadas circunstancias y relacionen las distintas temporalidades. De ahí que en varios de los atractivos turísticos surja, bajo ciertas condiciones, una referencia al pasado “místico” que lo trae hacia el presente, para de este modo legitimar la práctica de una variante específica del turismo espiritual. El enfoque benjaminiano aplicado a los fenómenos espirituales acaecidos a principios de los siglos xx y xxi demuestra cómo resulta imposible establecer un nexo causal entre las diferentes formas de religiosidad que se desarrollan actualmente en Lavalleja y las que tuvieron lugar en el pasado siglo.

This article describes and analyzes the evolution spiritual tourism has had -and continues to have- in the Department of Lavalleja (Uruguay), from an anti-historicist perspective. This means that the study of the evolution of spiritual tourism is not conceived from a “linear” approach over historical time. Rather, it is conceived from the application of the concept of time-now created by the philosopher Walter Benjamin. Thusly, the different temporalities that coexist in isolated form in certain occasions are reconnected. This avoids presenting a causal explanation of the historical development of spiritual tourism in the Department of Lavalleja, allowing certain aspects of the past to emerge in some instances connecting the different temporalities. Hence, in several rises of tourist attractions –under certain conditions– there is a reference to the “mystic” past bringing it to the present, in order to legitimize the practice of certain modalities of spiritual tourism. The Benjaminian approach of spiritual phenomena that took place at the beginning of the xx and xxi centuries, shows how it is impossible to establish a causal link between different forms of religiosity which are currently developed in the Department of Lavalleja.
