Barcelona is a tourist destination of renowned international interest; it offers a diversified range of tourism products and services, has a prestigious brand image and demand is not seasonalized. However, it also faces important challenges with regard to social issues and the territorial redistribution of business activity, as obvious tensions exist in relation to congestion and citizens’ perceptions. The new management structures created under the municipal government are an attempt to mitigate these effects, while the private sector continues to expand its range of products and services and social criticism increasingly claims more public attention. The network of critical relationships in the context of tourism highlights the need to implement efficient and coordinated strategies in tourism management.
